Against Pakistan at Headingley, he looked fluent en route to 91, only to fall cheaply for just 15 in the second Test at Lord's.
However, Boycott didn't hold back when explaining just how good he thinks Brook could be.
"I've said before and I'll say again, I've seen a lot of players. I haven't seen anybody with the talent he's got for a long time. Enormous talent. The timing, the shot playing, he's tall, big reach, but his thinking is just unbelievable," he said in episode three of the Geoffrey Boycott: An Extraordinary Innings podcast.
According to Boycott, the issue isn't skill. But it's decision-making, particularly Brook's tendency to approach Test cricket with a white-ball mindset that often costs him his wicket cheaply. He went as far as suggesting Brook could sit among the game's true greats if he sharpened that side of his game.
"If he wants to carry on playing that way, he'll have a decent career, but he has the ability, if he could think better, to be in the realms of Lara and Tendulkar. And, whoa, that's a bit special," he said.
"To be up in that stratosphere is huge. There ain't many above them, except Bradman, and that's special. But he plays one-day cricket to every ball. He doesn't have a look at the ball, he has to bash the first ball. He'll just keep getting caught at mid-off and mid-on and daft places."

Impressed by the talent of Brook, Boycott was ready to hit the training nets with the batsman. The veteran revealed how Brook's uncle sought him out at Headingley last year to have a word with his cousin.
"His uncle came to me last year and he said, 'Would you have a word with him?' Well, he asked me what I thought of him. I told him exactly this. He said, 'Really?' I said, 'Yeah.' I said that much ability is rare, special" Boycott recalled.
He then went on to add: "He said, 'Would you have a word with him?' I said, 'It's not for me to go to him. He might tell me to, you know, off' I said. But if he asked me, of course I'd help. Why would I not? I gave him my number and never heard a word."

A fair critique, but timing and trust matter as well
Boycott's assessment of Brook's talent isn't remotely far-fetched. Very few would argue against the idea that he possesses rare ability at this level. What's more interesting is the human element buried in this story, which is an offer of mentorship that simply went nowhere, despite coming through a trusted family connection rather than an unsolicited approach.
It's worth remembering, though, that not every player responds well to unsolicited advice, even well-intentioned advice from a legend of the game. Brook may already be working through these issues with England's current coaching setup, and silence doesn't necessarily mean disrespect.
