WAYNE, Neb. (KCAU) - The Wayne State football program enters the 2026 season with their sights set on the top of the NSIC as the Wildcats were picked fifth in a tightly-contested preseason coaches poll.
Wayne State is coming off a top-three finish in the conference, capping off last season with four consecutive wins on their way to securing a share of the NSIC South regular season title.
This year's team boasts a strong run game, led by South Division Preseason Player of the Year Dawson Forgy. The Iowa native set new single season program records with 1,400 yards on 241 carries and 21 total touchdowns.
Head coach Logan Masters is on the cusp of his fifth season leading the team as they aim to continue building consistency on both sides of the ball.
"This year being hard nosed, tough, physical. You know, we got a lot of guys from small town, small town Nebraska that developed and became really, you know, physically gifted. So just taking that with us," Forgy said.
"I think we can keep getting better. Week to week last last year, we really struggled the first four, seven weeks and we got a bye week and had a big jump. So we need to hopefully have that right away," Wayne State head coach Logan Masters said. "The competitiveness, the violence, the edge that we played the end of the year...when you start season with that and if we can do that, it sets us up to reach our goals that we set as a team."
Wayne State beging the season on Thursday at Nebraska-Kearney with the team's first home game scheduled for September 12th against Minnesota Duluth.
