This motto symbolizes ruthless determination and toughness, something we all love to see more from the Cowboys this year.
Like we learn from the movie though, there is a fine line that could lead to unethical behavior if not managed/incorporated properly. But, in such a physical sport like professional football, the “strike first, strike hard, no mercy” mindset pretty closely incorporates everything a team/individual needs in order to be at their ultimate best.
The Cobra Kai teaching represents a mindset of assertiveness and dominance and prioritizes a good offense over defense, which sharply contrasts from the Miyagi-Do style that emphasizes defense, balance, and moral discipline. Based on the way the Cowboys rosters constructed, the Cobra Kai model seems to fit best and we will explain why by breaking down it further below.
Strike first
Act before your opponent can react, take initiative in any confrontation
The “strike first” part of Cobra Kai’s motto obviously seems to apply more to Dallas’ offense more than their defense, but can definitely be incorporated for both.
Offensively, striking first means putting the opposition on their heels by scoring early and often. With the weapons Dak Prescott has at his disposal in both the running and passing game, this should be one of the higher scoring units in the entire league. But as we’ve seen, they don’t always score early .
Defensively striking first applies as well. Acting before the opponent can react is all about taking the initiative and disguising coverages pre-snap to create confusion/hesitation. This would allow Dallas’ defense to hopefully play with more confidence and aggressiveness.
Strike hard
Deliver powerful, decisive attacks to overwhelm the opponent
The “strike hard” part of Cobra Kai’s motto seems to apply more to the defensive side of the ball than the offense, but again, it can be incorporated in both.
Let’s start with the defense this time. Striking hard defensively means playing physically at the point of attack, in coverage, and especially when tackling. That means playing and hitting hard from the snap of the ball until the officials blow the whistle, making their presence known.
Offensively, striking hard starts with the offensive line being physical in both the run game and in pass protection, with the physicality rippling through the rest of their playmakers when running routes/blocking in the passing game, or on the ground when running the ball.
No mercy
Aim to dominate and in the conflict quickly, show no hesitation or compassion
The “no mercy” part of Cobra Kai’s part of motto applies both individually and to the team as a whole from the players to the coaching staff.
The “no mercy” mindset is how the Cowboys should play this year. That means everyone being relentless in the pursuit of complete domination against any opposition throughout the ballgame on a play-by-play basis. It means pounding opponents into submission and enjoying it, both quickly and efficiently.
This part of Cobra Kai’s motto could lead to unfortunate penalties or overaggressive play, which is why finding the right balance when showing “no mercy” could be difficult. But, finding the right balance could be a difference maker for the teams overall attitude/mindset.
