The Miami Dolphins are a young team in the first year of a rebuild, resetting their roster and their salary cap after years of trying to win now. This year is not expected to be anything special in South Florida, with many analysts considering Miami among the most likely teams to finish the year with the worst record and the first-overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft.
The roster turnover and lack of salary cap space have made Miami the youngest team in the league, but it also means the team is lacking depth across the entire roster. The Dolphins are just five days from having to drop their roster from the 90-man preseason limit to the 53-man regular season authorization. According to the Miami Herald’s Omar Kelly, the problem for Miami may not be who to cut, but rather who to keep.
Kelly writes Miami only has “roughly 45 legitimate NFL players.” It is a rough assessment of the team, but he explains:
When $179 million of the team’s cap space is committed to paying off debt from players who aren’t on the roster, there are a limited amount of resources the front office gets to use to improve the talent base. That somewhat explains why Miami’s backups have looked disappointing in the two joint practices and preseason games. This roster needs reinforcements, which is why Sullivan needs to view next week’s cut-down day (Aug. 30), and the days of releases that will follow it, as a supplemental draft for Miami, claiming talent at all positions that can potentially improve this roster.
