Dart, the Giants’ prized second-year quarterback, acted like an immature fool at one point during the Giants’ sixth training camp practice at The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
After running for a touchdown during a red-zone period late in practice, Dart celebrated in preening fashion — by throwing the ball at cornerback Greg Newsome’s helmet.
As you’d imagine, that upset Newsome, a projected starter who joined the Giants as a free agent this offseason.
After practice, Harbaugh — the Giants’ new no-nonsense big whistle — was asked what he thought about Dart doing that.
“I think it’s a 15-yard penalty for taunting,” Harbaugh told reporters , adding that he shouldn’t have to say anything to Dart about those antics, because it ought to be obvious the Giants don’t want these sort of flags.
“I think he understands that for the game-winning extra point, we don’t want it to be a 50-yard extra point,” Harbaugh said. “Do you think I need to say anything in that case? Pretty clear cut, right?”
Harbaugh probably will have harsher words for Dart behind closed doors. (Or he should, at least. A starting quarterback cannot act like that.)
During practice, for what it’s worth, Harbaugh penalized the offense by backing up kicker Ben Sauls for the extra point after Dart’s touchdown.
Dart is a passionate player, which is fine. But you can’t throw the ball at a defender’s helmet after scoring a touchdown — especially if that defender is one of your teammates.
As one of the Giants’ supposed leaders, Dart would be wise to quickly apologize to Newsome, who has every right to be angry about his team’s starting quarterback targeting him with a cheap shot during practice.
