But supporters will ask why a club-record signing was made in the first place if his place could become this uncertain so quickly. Eleven goals in 51 appearances is underwhelming, yes, but it also suggests a player who was never properly settled or consistently used in a way that brought out his strengths.
The fear for Newcastle fans is that this becomes another expensive lesson while rivals move smarter and faster in the market. If Napoli or Como can revive him, that will sting even more.
