See the full story · 1 sourcesAug. 6—MITCHELL — The Garretson Blue Jays hung crooked numbers on the Cadwell Park scoreboard early on Thursday, securing a spot in the second round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament.
Powered by three runs in the first inning and five more in the third, the Jays had 11 hits on 11 runs and benefitted from four Lesterville errors in an 11-1, seven-inning win over the Broncs in the first round.
The Bluejays (14-3) will play Dell Rapids PBR at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the second round of the tournament. The game will be a rematch of the 2024 Class B semifinal round, which PBR won 5-3 over Garretson in Mitchell on the way to a state title.
Sam Siegel had a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs and Robin Chute had three hits and three RBIs for the Jays, who were the champions in the District 7B tournament. Scott Splett also drove in a pair of runs for Garretson.
The Blue Jays got a big boost in the third inning when Siegel had a three-run double to right field on a ball that was lost in the sun by the Lesterville defense, swelling the lead to 7-0. Robin Chute added a two-RBI double moments later for a 9-0 edge through three frames.
Derek Fischer controlled matters on the mound for Garretson, throwing all seven innings and tossing 93 pitches, including 68 for strikes. He yielded six hits, one run and struck out five batters.
Lesterville (9-12) broke up the shutout in the fourth inning when Dawson Bietz had an RBI single to center field to score Michael Drotzmann. The Broncs had six hits for the game, with two from Tyler Edler. Bietz took the loss on the mound, allowing five hits and three earned runs in two innings, while Ethan Wishon threw four innings of relief and allowed six hits and seven runs (six earned).
