Yordan Alvarez Aims To Earn a Spot in MLB History With Historic 2026 Performance Thus Far

The Houston Astros are in a solid spot as a team to compete for an AL West title as they are currently in the lead for the division, but on another note, designated hitter Yordan Alvarez is having a tremendous season, which could help him earn two major accomplishments.
Talking about potential accomplishments, Alvarez's performance this season has put him in a position to secure the Triple Crown.
Recently, ESPN writer David Schoenfield wrote about the 10 storylines that will shape the rest of the 2026 season, and on that list was Alvarez's chase for the Triple Crown, which is something that hasn't been done since 2012.
At this point, Alvarez does seem to be in a good position to win the Triple Crown as he is currently leading the MLB and therefore the AL in batting average with a .322, leads the AL in home runs with 35 (No. 2 in the entire MLB), and leads the AL in RBIs with 87 (No. 2 in the entire MLB).
It is important to note that Alvarez's performance has also put him in an excellent position to win the AL MVP.
In terms of Alvarez's top competition for the AL MVP specifically that seems to be Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays and Dillon Dingler of the Detroit Tigers. As far as the stats go, Alvarez seems to be in a good spot overall:
Yordan Alvarez: .322 batting average, 35 home runs, and 87 RBIs
Junior Caminero: .277 batting average, 35 home runs, and 76 RBIs
Dillon Dingler: .270 batting average, 26 home runs, and 80 RBIs
After looking at the stats, Dingler and Caminero are challenging Alvarez in at least one category, but the separation in batting average is significant, and that alone may be enough to earn Alvarez the AL MVP.
Getting back to the Triple Crown, Alvarez is in jeopardy of losing it if he cannot separate from Caminero in the home run category as they are both tied at 35. Down the stretch of the season it will be interesting to whether Alvarez or Caminero get hot or, if one of them benefits from opposing pitchers getting worn down with the toll of the season adding up.
Regardless, Alvarez needs to continue building on his very impressive statistical campaign so he can win the AL MVP, but also give himself a chance to become the 13th Triple Crown winner in MLB history.
With a series against Tampa Bay still on the schedule in the first part of September, Alvarez has an opportunity late in the season to make another strong statement directly against Caminero as to why he is the best player in the American League.
So, as Alvarez heads into the final stretch of the season, if he can create separation against Caminero in home runs and continue hitting the ball consistently, Alvarez should have a good chance to lock up the AL MVP and quite possibly notch his name in MLB history as a Triple Crown winner in the American League.
