Ravens' Kyle Hamilton Shuts Down Big Lamar Jackson Criticism
The first day of Baltimore Ravens training camp is in the books, and All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton spoke to the media following practice.
Hamilton touched on a handful of topics, including shutting down one of the biggest critiques Lamar Jackson has faced this offseason. With many saying the quarterback lost a step, the Ravens safety said the complete opposite, admitting the signal caller "got faster."
"I feel like he might've gotten faster somehow," Hamilton said . "I don't want to age him, but he's turning a certain age next year [January] and it doesn't seem like that. I feel like he got faster. I feel like he ran today. It was really fast."
Jackson’s speed is one of his many attributes, but over the past few seasons, critics have wondered whether he has lost a step.
When Jackson entered the NFL, many believed his athleticism was his biggest advantage but questioned whether that style of play would be sustainable throughout his career.
Jackson quickly put those early criticisms to rest. In recent seasons, however, some critics have argued that he has lost a step in terms of his speed and quickness. The 29-year-old also hasn't come close to matching the 179 rushing attempts he logged during his 2019 MVP campaign.
Jackson has gone over 100 rushing attempts whenever he’s played 12+ games outside of the 2025 season. Last year, Jackson played in 13 games but rushed the ball only 67 times for 349 yards, the lowest total of his career.
Jackson's rushing numbers last season may have contributed to the injuries he sustained, including a hamstring strain and a significant back contusion late in the season.
In a recent interview on "The Lounge Podcast," Jackson couldn’t help but laugh at how critics have flipped the script when it comes to his running ability or lack thereof.
"I just play football,” Jackson said . “Early on in my career, it was, ‘He can't throw'; it was I can't throw; 'He's a running back.' Now it's ‘He’s not running enough.’
"It's pick your poison. I'm the type of player you've got to pick your poison."
Jackson’s dual-threat ability is one of the many reasons why the Ravens win over 70 percent of their games when he’s under center.
Jackson is a two-time MVP and one of the league's most dynamic players because of his speed and athleticism, and he'll look to showcase those abilities this season as he enters the year fully healthy.
If Jackson can return to the same form that he had in 2024, the critics may just forget that they quesitoned the Ravens quarterback's ability to be a quick runner.
