College teams are coming up with more creative promotions to increase fan interest, but Akron has taken that idea to the next level.
The Zips announced a promotion that will actually give a fan a chance to be an offensive assistant coach for a game. While the fan won't actually have a headset on during the game, it is still a rare promotion that allows a fan to help impact how the team plays on the field.
For Akron fans who've dreamed of trying to help the team prepare for a game, this promotion is their chance to live out that dream. Even if it is just one game, it's still an incredible opportunity.
Here's a look at Akron's offensive coordinator promotion.

Akron offensive coordinator promotion
Akron announced a promotion that will allow one fan to be an "Offensive Coordinator of the Game." The promotion will give a season-ticket holder a chance to help the coaching staff script the first offensive series for Akron's home opener against Robert Morris.
"We're always looking for new ways to bring our fans closer to the program," Director of Athletics Andrew Goodrich said. "This is about giving one of our most loyal supporters a seat at the table, right alongside our coaching staff, on the biggest night of the season."
While the promotion is something that could annoy the coaching staff, head coach Joe Moorhead endorsed it in its announcement.
"I'm looking forward to collaborating with the season ticket holder who wins this contest," Moorhead said. "This will give our fans a behind-the-scenes experience that has never been done before anywhere, so I'm excited to show them how to put together the opening script and see what they can do."

— Akron Football (@ZipsFB) August 4, 2026 Only season-ticket holders are eligible for the promotion, and every season-ticket holder will enter a random drawing. Additionally, season-ticket holders could receive additional entries by helping recruit new season-ticket holders to Akron football.
Akron will hold a random drawing on August 19 to decide the winner. That fan will then have a private meeting with Moorhead during the week of the Zips' home opener to help script the opening drive.
After playing Wake Forest on the road to open the season, Akron hosts Robert Morris on September 12 in its home opener.
How to enter Akron's 'Offensive Coordinator of the Game' promotion
In order to enter this promotion, fans have to hold season tickets for Akron football this season. The number of tickets a season-ticket holder has in the random drawing correlates to the number of season-tickets they hold over the course of the season.
Additionally, fans can add more tickets to the drawing by recruiting new fans to become season-ticket holders. The entire promotion is essentially a way to increase season-ticket participation.
