WNBA Announces Launch of Replay Center in 2027 Season

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced on Saturday the league will launch an official replay center during the 2027 season.
Officiating has sparked multiple issues throughout the league this season. Implementing a replay center is intended to increase the accuracy and efficiency of decisions by on-court officials.
"As the WNBA continues its extraordinary growth, we're committed to investing in every aspect of the game, including the technology and resources that support players, teams, and officials," said Head of WNBA League Operations Bethany Donaphin in the league's press release.
"Leveraging the NBA 's state-of-the-art Replay Center is an important step in the continued evolution of our game. It allows us to enhance the consistency and efficiency of replay reviews while embracing innovations that strengthen the competition and deliver the best possible experience for all our stakeholders."
The WNBA currently has a replay system, which allows coaches up to two challenges per game. However, the new replay center will give on-court officials immediate access to more camera angles to help the process of reviewing plays.
The NBA first implemented its replay center during the 2014-15 season, and the WNBA's replay center will also be located in the same facility as the NBA's in Secaucus, New Jersey.
The NBA also has a “last two-minute” report that evaluates every call during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime. Engelbert said she has spoken to players about implementing “last two-minute” reports into the WNBA, but the league has not made an official decision on the matter because it would be another large investment.
"We know it because we know what the NBA goes through," Engelbert said. "It is certainly on the list, but nothing to report on it."
