Falcons Recap: Free-agent targets, James Pearce update, trade proposal
The Atlanta Falcons were already flying under the radar when training camp began last week, and it's safe to say even more people have written them off due to uncertainty at the quarterback and edge rusher positions. While few are projecting the team to make the playoffs, it's way too early to write Atlanta off.
In today's Falcons Wire Recap, the NFL sets a timeline for James Pearce's suspension ruling, Jalon Walker is officially ruled out for the season, ESPN suggests a wild trade, we look some free-agent edge rushers and round up the latest highlights from training camp.
Jalon Walker out for season with torn ACL
Walker will miss the entire 2026 NFL season due to a torn ACL. The former first-round pick went down at Tuesday's practice and had to be carted off of the field. This injury is a major blow to Atlanta's front seven, especially considering the progress it made during the 2025 season (franchise record 57 sacks).
The former Georgia Bulldog finished second among rookies with 5.5 sacks last season, while adding 36 tackles (24 solo), five tackles for loss, nine QB hits and two forced fumbles. We expect Samson Ebukam and Azeez Ojulari to step up in Walker's absence. And don't be surprised if the team brings in a free agent or two, which brings us to our next story.
3 free-agent replacements for Jalon Walker
The Falcons have not made an official transaction regarding Walker, but we expect them to sign a free agent before putting him on the injured reserve list. Our own Tim Weaver broke down three potential replacements for Walker who are currently available in free agency. One possible option is to bring back veteran edge Leonard Floyd.
"If the Falcons want to go the familiar face route, their best option will be to bring back Leonard Floyd, who spent the 2025 season in Atlanta. His pass rushing numbers weren't up to his usual standard (3.5 sacks, 11 QB hits), but keep in mind he was only on the field for 49 percent of the team's defensive snaps last year. With a larger role in the absence of Walker and Pearce, he could get back to posting the kind of numbers he did with the 49ers in 2024 - when he totaled 8.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits."

With Walker out for the season, all eyes have turned to James Pearce's and his possible suspension. Falcons president and CEO Greg Beadles said the league is anticipating a ruling on Pearce in the next few days.
"First of all, James has been doing really well, everything that we want him to do on and off of the field, so that's been great," Beadles told Falcons reporter Kelly Price. "And we do expect sometime in the next several days that we'll hear from the league just officially what the stance is going to be with him going forward."

If the Falcons are looking to punt on the season, they could look to maximize the value of some of their future free agents. According to Seth Walder at ESPN , Atlanta should send star safety Jessie Bates III to the San Francisco 49ers along with a sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2027 third-rounder.
"If the Falcons were expected to contend, it would make sense to keep Bates and see the original contract through. But they aren't, and with a ton of 2027 cap space even after the Bijan Robinson extension, the Falcons will likely be spenders next offseason. They would risk losing Bates without getting a compensatory pick in return if he walks in free agency. So it's better for Atlanta to deal him now. And while that would mean finding a replacement for Bates, the Falcons wouldn't be lacking in safety talent thanks to emerging second-year player Xavier Watts."

The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Falcons wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge , according to a report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Hodge spent the last four seasons in Atlanta, contributing on special teams while providing depth as a fourth/fifth receiver.
The 49ers just lost wide receiver Ricky Pearsall for the season due to a knee injury. Hodge can provide some depth in San Francisco while reuniting with former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, who currently serves as the team's defensive coordinator.
