The Chicago Bears had a poor preseason showing against the Cincinnati Bengals , where the secondary was torched all night. Following the game, head coach Ben Johnson had a notable injury update that raises even more questions about an injury-riddled defensive backfield.
Most of Chicago's starters played for one series against Cincinnati's backups, but cornerback Tyrique Stevenson wasn't among them. Following the game, Johnson revealed that Stevenson is officially week-to-week with an injury that puts his Week 1 availability in question.
Stevenson got tangled up with receiver Luther Burden III during practice a couple of weeks ago. While he was able to finish practice and even return the next day, he's missed the last week due to injury. While Stevenson returned for Thursday's joint practice against the Bengals, he was a limited participant.
With Stevenson sidelined for an unknown period of time, it's another blow to a unit that was supposed to be the strength of the defense before injuries ravaged the secondary. Safety Coby Bryant will miss the next four to six months after knee surgery while nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon still has not practiced this summer as he deals with a calf injury.
Right now, the Bears have just two starters in the secondary who are completely healthy in cornerback Jaylon Johnson and rookie safety Dillon Thieneman. It's not encouraging with the Carolina Panthers on deck for the Sept. 13 opener.
