Spencer Arrighetti, who was traded from the Houston Astros to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, left his first minor-league rehab start with his new organization with an apparent injury Thursday night.
Arrighetti, who was traded for center fielder Daulton Varsho , went on the injured list due to right foot nerve irritation after his final start with the Astros on July 24. A day after being traded to the Blue Jays, who already were at Daikin Park for a series against the Astros, Arrighetti threw a bullpen session Tuesday in front of Toronto coaches and declared himself "ready to pitch."
After the trade, Blue Jays manager John Schneider had said the plan was to get Arrighetti one minor-league rehab start and then plug him into the big-league starting rotation. That plan now appears to be on hold.
Arrighetti was pitching for the Triple-A Buffalo Bison when he exited with one out in the third inning. He had thrown a perfect first inning, then a scoreless second despite walking the first two hitters of the inning. After getting the leadoff hitter in the third inning to pop out, Arrighetti threw three more pitches before reportedly signaling to the dugout for a trainer, and he was removed from the game after having thrown just 39 pitches.
The 28-year-old right-hander went 7-5 with a 4.60 ERA in 17 starts with the Astros this season, but was 0-5 with an 8.34 ERA in his last nine starts before the trade.
Varsho, who can become a free agent after this season, has started all three games in center field for the Astros since the trade. He's gone 2-for-10 with four walks for a .429 on-base percentage.
