Royal High has decided to part ways with second-year football coach Adam Brubaker hours before its season-opening game Friday night.
Assistant coach Cody MacArthur will lead the host Highlanders against visiting North Hills-Monroe on Aug. 21 and an interim coach “will be named shortly,” according to principal Reina Zapata
“The District has completed its review of the incident from earlier this week,” Reina wrote in an email to parents Friday afternoon. “As a result, the leadership of Royal High School’s football program will immediately change.

Brubaker kicked a football that struck a Royal player during Wednesday’s practice . He was told not to return to campus Thursday and informed of his release during a meeting at the Simi Valley Unified School District on Friday morning.
“Our focus now is to support our student-athletes, provide stability for the program, and help the team move forward together,” Zapata wrote. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding throughout this process and look forward to supporting our players and coaches for the remainder of the season.”
Royal was 3-7 in 2025, Brubaker’s first full season at the helm.
