Tony Romo’s broadcasting career is on hold now. CBS Sports placed the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback on leave after his July 23 arrest in Milwaukee on suspicion of driving under the influence.
According to reports, police found an open container of alcohol in his car and noted that Romo struggled with field sobriety tests. He was also cited for refusing a breath test, and his court date is set for Sept. 21.
With Romo sidelined, the network has already named J.J. Watt to take his spot in the top broadcast booth alongside Jim Nantz. According to reports from The Athletic, Romo will face a significant challenge in regaining his job.
Meanwhile, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones broke his silence on the situation in an interview with FOX 4, publicly backing his former quarterback and stating that Romo has always known how to handle adversity.
"I have had a chance talk to him and I've been talking to him," Jones said . "I love him. I love what he's about. I love his character. I love his love of sport, and he's a very, very unique talent."

He added, "His vision was just mesmerizing when he was a player. He sees things and can articulate it so instantly. He'd walk out under center at practice and the defense would have 12 people out there and it'd take him about a second to say, 'Coach, we got 12 guys out here, get one of them off.'"
As an undrafted free agent, Romo threw for 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns during his 13 active seasons in Dallas. Jones closed the interview by noting that Romo's "as real as he sounds. He feels every down time. He feels every up time."
Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million extension in 2020 that runs through 2029. The $18 million-a-year contract remains the largest deal for an analyst in sports broadcasting history. CBS has not moved to void the agreement yet, choosing instead to place him on leave "until further notice."
