Penn State projected to improve win total by CBS Sports
For the Penn State Nittany Lions , nothing can get worse than last season. After finishing the season at .500, wholesale changes had to be made. With the firing of James Franklin, Penn State proved they needed to move in a different direction. In the offseason, they brought in Matt Campbell from Iowa State to lead the squad. He brought with him several transfers who will be tasked with changing the program immediately.
Throughout the offseason, many different analyst sites have had trouble describing what this Penn State team will be. Will Matt Campbell succeed in his first season coaching in the Big Ten? Or will a new-look squad fail to meet expectations as key transfer additions adjust to a more competitive conference? Well, according to CBS Sports , one thing is certain: anything over their six-win total from last season should be expected.
"Matt Campbell couldn't have asked for a better schedule for his first season at Penn State. The Nittany Lions avoid Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon this fall, and the opportunity is there to reach 10 wins if all the new pieces mesh", Cody Nagel says in his piece about teams that will rebound this season.
The easy schedule should come as fuel to the fire for Matt Campbell, especially considering that Penn State faced all three of those teams last year and lost. Still, tough matchups are still peppered throughout the schedule that could test Campbell's squad. USC at home could be a huge spectacle as it potentially could be Campbell's first White Out game. Two tough tests on the road against Michigan and Washington , though, could provide more insight into this team.
Still, the "pieces are in place for a substantial jump in the win column", as stated by Nagel. And who knows? It could even be enough to get Penn State a pretty miraculous Big Ten title game appearance and maybe even a College Football Playoff spot.
