Last week was the start of school and the start of high school sports across the state of Iowa. And the Iowa City area saw some impressive performances to start the season.
Iowa City West got big-time play from a pair of sophomores in its home-opening win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Clear Creek Amana started the season with a straight-sets win over Center-Point Urbana and had some big offensive contributions.
Tennis and cross country seasons all got underway. Iowa City West and Iowa City Liberty took part in the Trojan Early Bird meet, and Solon competed at the Seminole Valley Classic.
Here are the Iowa City Press-Citizen's nominees for Female Athlete of the Week. The winner will be announced at the end of the week.
Bailey Simpson, Clear Creek Amana
As one of the senior leaders for the Clippers, Simpson will be asked to provide attacking and blocking at the net as well as helping to lead a younger CCA team.
Simpson had 13 kills on 29 attempts against No. 11 Center-Point Urbana. She made only one error in the game, and on defense had 10 digs.
Cyan Blommer, Iowa City West
Blommer made a statement on Tuesday in the Trojans' home opener when she finished with 11 kills, showcasing her ability to hit from different spots on the court.
Blommer put in the work with her teammates over the summer and attended a number of college camps to expand her game.
She finished second on the team with those 11 kills against Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Julia Schlarbaum, Clear Creek Amana
The Clippers might be one of the most talented teams in 4A with Simpson and Schlarbaum, a junior who rose to the occasion in the Clippers' first game of the season.
She ended with a team-high 16 kills, two blocks, a pair of assists and 11 digs to help Clear Creek Amana in the straight-sets win.
Livya Nelson, Solon
The cross country season got started and the Spartans took part in the Seminole Valley Classic, where Nelson took third place with a time of 20 minutes 40.6 seconds.
Solon took first place with five runners finishing in the top 10.
Josephine Austen, Iowa City West
The sophomore started the season leading the Trojans with kills. She had 12 from the right-side position.
Austen took reps at the middle position over the summer to allow her to grow into the timing that is needed to be an effective attacker.
