The Arizona Cardinals won their first preseason game on Thursday, securing a commanding 27-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.
But it wasn't third-round rookie Carson Beck who took them there, as some may have hoped.
Veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew II played the majority of snaps, finishing 14 of 16 for 101 yards and two touchdowns, with Jacoby Brissett and second-year player Kedon Slovis also seeing action. This would have been a great opportunity for Beck to further establish himself in the pecking order of Cardinals QBs, but he sat out the entire game due to a rib injury suffered the week before.
After Thursday's game, however, Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur eased any concerns over the severity of Beck's injury.
"Tough dude. No concern level really," LaFleur said. "If this would have been flag football or seven-on-seven, we would have trotted him out there, and he could have thrown. He just had discomfort, and it's one of those things I was actually talking to [Matthew] Stafford about, and that sometimes a few days later, it feels a little bit worse.
"Being the preseason, I just didn't want to risk it. I know it was kind of a bummer for our fan base, and you guys, and me, and all of us, because we want to see these guys out there, but it was what it was. We thought that was in the best interest to make sure that we sat him back."

Beck suffered the injury during Arizona's narrow 33-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers in the Hall of Fame Game last week. It happened in the first quarter, but he still managed to finish the game and was actually one of the standouts from the matchup, going 15 of 19 for 188 yards and a touchdown.
Naturally, after a rookie puts up that kind of performance in his first preseason game, fans want to see more of it — especially for a team like the Cardinals, who are desperate for steady quarterback play.
Arizona's next preseason game comes Saturday, Aug. 22, at home against the Dallas Cowboys, before the Cardinals close out the preseason against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. If LaFleur is right that there's no reason for concern, we should see Beck in one, if not both, of those games.
