Speaking to Dave Davis on the latest episode of Media Matters for Anfield Index, Lynch provided a measured update on Liverpool’s reported interest in the Ukraine international, while stressing that strengthening the defence remains an urgent priority.
Liverpool Need Defensive Reinforcements
Much of the conversation centred on Liverpool’s defensive depth following Joe Gomez’s latest injury setback during the 4,2 pre season victory over Sunderland.
Lynch was emphatic about the club’s position.
“They have to sign someone who can play centre half and right back. It’s as simple as that for me.”
He argued that Liverpool cannot continue planning around Gomez’s availability, explaining:
“They just can’t rely on him.”
Lynch also dismissed suggestions that Gomez’s injury should suddenly alter Liverpool’s transfer strategy.
“That was true before he went down injured.”
Instead, he believes recruitment in defence should already have been firmly established as a priority.

When Dave Davis referenced reports linking Liverpool with PSG defender Ilya Zabarnyi, Lynch revealed he had made further enquiries.
While acknowledging there had been previous indications that there could be something behind the rumours, he explained that recent conversations had lowered expectations.
“Something I’d kind of heard and had mentioned a couple of times is maybe there’s something potentially in it.”

“Had a conversation last week whereby someone at Liverpool kind of said to me that they would be surprised if he arrives.”
That assessment led him to believe much of the speculation may be coming from elsewhere.
“I get the impression then that a lot of that kind of talk is maybe being driven from the player side as something he would be interested in if the opportunity comes up.”
Rather than describing Liverpool’s interest as advanced, Lynch suggested the situation remains inactive.
“It doesn’t feel like something that’s massively active from Liverpool at the moment.”
He did leave open the possibility that circumstances could change later in the transfer window.
“Maybe is an option that comes up later in the window if they miss out on others, but it doesn’t seem like a really active one at the moment from what I’m hearing.”
PSG Link Remains Uncertain
Although Zabarnyi currently represents one of the few defensive names publicly linked with Liverpool, Lynch made clear there is no indication that negotiations are progressing.
Instead, he admitted curiosity over where Liverpool eventually turn.
“Fascinated to see who it actually will be because, like I say, they’ve got to do something.”
That urgency was repeated throughout the discussion, with Lynch consistently returning to Liverpool’s lack of cover across central defence and right back.
He believes the club should target a player capable of filling both positions, rather than looking for a specialist in only one role.
Liverpool Still Have Decisions Ahead
