1) The juggernaut continued to roll Friday night at Fenway as the Red Sox stomped the Athletics 13-1 to stretch their winning streak to nine games in a row. The Red Sox have now won — deep breath — 11 of their last 12, 27 of their last 30 and 35 of their last 43. The win also enabled them to pull even at home (29-29) as the team won for the 12th time at Fenway in the last 14 tries. The win was fueled by a strong performance from Payton Tolle (six innings of one-run ball) and supported by a 15-hit attack. The win marked the first time the Sox had scored 12 runs or more in consecutive games since 2016.
2) How good was Payton Tolle Friday night? Put it this way: when you’re being mentioned in the same sentence as Roger Clemens, that signifies a big night. Tolle’s 14 strikeouts were the most for a Red Sox pitcher 23 or younger since Clemens fanned 20 Seattle Mariners on April 19, 1986. He also had the highest number of swing-and-misses (24) since James Paxton had 25 in June of 2023. Tolle was simply overpowering, striking out every member of the Athletics’ starting lineup at least once except for outfielder Lawrence Butler. In five of his six innings, he posted multiple strikeouts. As impressive, perhaps, he didn’t walk a single hitter.
3) Is Anthony Seigler busting out of his slump? After serving as a spark plug in the Red Sox’ 15-game winning streak last month, Seigler went into a lengthy funk, to the point where he was hitting just .172 over a 20-game span, collecting just 11 hits in 64 at-bats, costing him playing time at second as Nick Sogard claimed the position. But Seigler had a two-hit game in the Sox’ comeback win Thursday and he added a double and a single in the Friday romp. The last time Seigler had back-to-back games with multiple hits was June 24-25.
4) The Jarren Duran power show continues. Duran got the Red Sox on the board in the second inning when, after a one-out walk t o Andruw Monasterio, Duran walloped a pitch into the Monster Seats. It was his third homer in the last five games, giving him 16 for the season. Recall that Duran erupted for nine homers in the month of May before cooling in a big way a month later. Is this the start of another big month for him at the plate? He’s already tied his home run output from a year ago and is within five of his career high of 21, set in 2024.
5) Catcher Jake Rogers probably isn’t going to be here for a long time. He was part of the Adley Rutschman trade because, after including Carlos Narváez in the deal, the Red Sox needed a veteran catcher to serve as a backup until Rutschman is cleared to play. But in a short span, Rogers has made his presence felt. In Thursday’s marathon win, he worked a walk and had a sacrifice fly. On Friday, he belted Wall-ball doubles in each of his first two plate appearances, knocking in a run and scoring another.
6) The energy that Payton Tolle gives off is palpable. When center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela robbed Athletics second baseman Jonathan Ornelas for the final out in the third inning, Tolle celebrated with an exaggerated leg kick as he jumped off the mound. The big lefty isn’t just good, he’s highly entertaining and engaging.
7) It’s likely that Raymond Burgos will have a very short stay with the Red Sox. Called up from Worcester to fortify a depleted bullpen after the 13-inning affair the night before, Burgos made the second major-league appearance of his career and contributed three shutout innings in relief of Tolle, retiring all nine hitters he faced.
8) In the middle game of the three-game set between the teams on Saturday, it will be a pitching matchup of LHP Jake Bennett (7-4, 2.90 ERA) vs. LHP Gage Jump (4-7, 4.59) at 4:10 p.m.
