The Athletics announced All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers underwent successful surgery following his torn meniscus Tuesday, but didn't explicitly rule him out for the remainder of the season.
The Athletics are yet to announce a timeline for Langeliers' return following the surgery, per MLB .com's Martín Gallegos, just days after manager Mark Kotsay said the surgery would knock the first-time All-Star out for the remainder of the year.
Langeliers underwent a medial meniscectomy to repair the cartilage in his knee, which has a 4-6 week recovery time and could see him return before the end of the year, though his demands as a catcher may require him to take some extra time to recover.
Langeliers' return likely wouldn't do much for the A's at the moment, as they have arguably been the worst team in baseball since the beginning of July. They've only won four games since July 1, and lost nine in a row heading into the All-Star break. Their postseason hopes are all but crushed now, as they sit 10 games out of the division lead and a Wild Card spot.
The Athletics likely wouldn't want to chance anything with Langeliers either, as he has been fantastic for them over the course of the season. He hit 23 home runs prior to his injury, and tallied 51 RBIs as well. His 127 wRC+ ranks third in MLB, only behind fellow All-Star catchers Dillon Dingler and Drake Baldwin.
The Athletics' first option behind Langeliers is veteran catcher Jonah Heim, who began his MLB journey with the Athletics in 2020 before stops with the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves. He came back to the A's in May, after they traded cash to the Braves, who designated him for assignment the same day.
Heim looked good through his first couple of months back in green and gold, but recent struggles have seen his numbers drop below where he'd like them to be. He has a .695 OPS on the year, hitting nine homers and driving in 25 runs with his current team.
The A's also called up Brian Serven following Langeliers' injury, and he will serve behind Heim as the backup. Serven has only played 103 games in MLB since making his debut in 2022, featuring for the Colorado Rockies and Toronto Blue Jays before signing a minor league deal with the A's in the offseason.
He has played two games so far this season, recording one hit through four at-bats.
