One of Bay Area residents’ most popular destination spots is prepping for a very unwanted visitor; Tropical Storm Lala is bearing down on the Hawaiian Islands.
As the weather changes, preparations have been getting more intense. While many local travelers said they’re not changing their plans, they are keeping an eye on the skies.
As Tropical Storm Lala bears down on Hawaii, crews are preparing for what could be the first major hurricane to ever hit the Big Island.
The Honolulu Zoo is taking steps to protect its animals as the islands, especially the big island, are preparing for heavy rain. An emergency has now been declared.
“Usually the tropical systems, as they approach the Hawaiian Islands, start to weaken, but this time we seeing it possibly strengthen as we go through the weekend,” NBC Bay Area Meteorologist Kari Hall said.
Meanwhile, Bay Area travelers on their way to Hawaii say they’re watching the weather, but aren’t ready to cancel their Hawaiian dreams.
“You know, I need to see my dad so I’m gonna go, and I trust Hawaiian Airlines, right, they are the best airline,” traveler Plyfaa Sewanamalyk-Murphy said.
Some said they’ve been through island storms before.
“Beautiful, it’s raining, everything’s calm, it’s almost like a facade is lifted and you’re really getting the true experience of nature,” traveler Vartan Kendirdjian said.
For those whose flight is cancelled because of the weather, travel experts said they have they right to a refund or rebooking, both for flights and hotels.
