Dallas Mavericks' 2026 Season Outlook

They're heading into the season with a much different mindset than they had a year ago. This isn't a team trying to make one more push with a veteran-heavy roster. The focus has shifted toward building around Cooper Flagg and figuring out what the next version of the franchise looks like.

That process will take a while. Don't expect it overnight. But, new team president Masai Ujiri appears willing to be patient, and the offseason moves reflect that. Dallas wasn't chasing quick fixes. Instead, the Mavericks added more young talent and gave themselves more options moving forward.

The biggest addition might be Zaccharie Risacher. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft arrived through a three-team trade, giving Dallas another high-upside prospect to develop alongside Flagg. Risacher's first NBA season was filled with the kind of ups and downs that come with being a young player, but his size and defensive tools give the Mavericks something they can work with right now.

The timing makes sense. Dallas is trying to build a group that can grow together.

The Mavericks also added Santi Aldama and Marcus Sasser, two players who bring different things to the roster. Aldama gives them another versatile forward, while Sasser adds guard depth and another player capable of creating offensive chances.

Then there is the rookie class. Morez Johnson Jr., Sergio de Larrea and Tarik Biberovic all have opportunities to earn minutes early. That isn't always the case for young players on veteran teams, but Dallas is at a point where development is part of the plan.

There will likely be more changes ahead. Several veterans are believed to be available in trade talks, though Kyrie Irving doesn't appear to be included in that group. Keeping Irving gives the Mavericks an experienced star who can help guide a very young roster through the ups and downs of an NBA season.

The biggest challenge will be finding the right balance. Sure, Dallas wants to develop Flagg and its young players, but it also doesn't want to waste the value of having proven talent around them. This team can hopefully do both.
