The Philadelphia 76ers may have had the best offseason in the entire NBA. At the very least, they have had the best offseason in the Eastern Conference. It all began with a blockbuster trade for former Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, a move that ultimately helped lead to the signing of LeBron James.
The four-time NBA champion chose Philadelphia on Friday following a month-long free agency process. After James announced he was joining the 76ers, the organization also reached an agreement with his former teammate, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
“Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is negotiating a buyout with the Grizzlies and intends to sign with the 76ers, per Chris B Haynes. KCP joins Bron in Philly," Bleacher Report posted.
However, the 76ers had to make several corresponding roster moves to make both signings official while remaining below the first and second aprons. The first move was waiving former first-round pick Dalen Terry.
“The Sixers waive Dalen Terry to clear space for LeBron James and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Terry, a former first-round pick, had a non-guaranteed contract for the upcoming season. Philadelphia must still move one additional player to create enough room for both additions,” NBA writer Jake Weinbach wrote.
Still, Philadelphia needed to make one more move to finalize both additions. With Caldwell-Pope clearing waivers on Tuesday, the 76ers acted quickly by trading former SEC Player of the Year Johni Broome to the Los Angeles Clippers .
“The Philadelphia 76ers are trading C/F Johni Broome and a second-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for cash considerations, sources tell ESPN. The deal allows the 76ers to stay under both first and second aprons while signing LeBron James and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
The Broome trade will likely be Philadelphia's final move of the offseason, capping what has been one of the league's most impressive summers. The 76ers have gone from the No. 7 seed last season to one of the favorites in both the Eastern Conference and the NBA.
Philadelphia now boasts a loaded starting five, one that will be a nightmare matchup for opposing teams. The bench is also beginning to take shape, giving the 76ers one of the most complete rosters in the league.
