SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A student was arrested for having a gun at a high school in South L.A. on Wednesday -- the first day of school for Los Angeles Unified School District students.
The arrest happened at Santee High School. AIR7 flew over the school on Maple Avenue, where several patrol cars were seen parked outside.
According to the Los Angeles School Police Department, an altercation between students led to an administrative search.
During that search, authorities discovered that a student was in possession of a firearm.
The student was taken into custody by Los Angeles School Police, and the parents of the students involved were notified, according to the department.
The school was briefly placed on lockdown, but it was lifted by 10:45 a.m., and students resumed their regularly scheduled day.
"As a reminder, students should not bring dangerous items to school, including items that may resemble or imitate a dangerous object. Our school will continue to follow the District's Discipline Foundation Policy to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students," the department wrote in a statement. "We take the safety and security of our students and our campus very seriously. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to discuss with their children the importance of using good judgment and avoiding dangerous activities."
