METAIRIE, La. ( WGNO ) - The most competitive part of the Saints 2026 training camp is about to begin.
New Orleans hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday for the team's first joint practice of the preseason, and both head coach Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Brandon Staley are ready to see the Black and Gold line up against a different team.
"It's going to be good for our guys. I think sometimes just getting a different perspective, getting to see things from a different angle with a different defense. They're going to play things a little bit different. Their offense is going to present some different things that our offense doesn't for our defense. These are all great learning tools, and I think it's perfect for what we need right now," Moore explained.
"I think it gives us an opportunity to see where our guys command of their assignments and their technique is. I think it's a really good evaluation tool for guys to go against the different set of players and schemes and just see where our progress is. From there, we're going to see where we need to go for the rest of training camp," Staley added.
The main advantage of a joint practice is extended reps for the starting unit.
Most NFL teams do not play their starters very much during week one of the preseason.
However, Thursday's joint practice will see more time-on-task for the ones than Saturday's preseason opener.
"A lot of these starters will have a lot of reps in these joint practices, and as a result, they won't play as much in preseason football. That's just part of this, but I think it's a great, great environment for those guys to get really good work," the head coach finished.
Moore confirmed most of the starting unit will not play Saturday's preseason matchup, but as for the starters who will participate, it will be based off of Thursday's session.
