Three years after a contract dispute dominated headlines in Indianapolis , Jonathan Taylor is entering training camp with a much different mindset.
In 2023, Taylor’s search for a new contract became one of the NFL’s biggest offseason storylines. The star running back staged a hold-in, requested a trade following a widely publicized meeting with late Colts owner Jim Irsay, and faced an uncertain future with the franchise.
Fast forward to 2026, and the atmosphere couldn’t be more different.
Taylor is once again seeking a contract extension as he enters the final year of the three-year, $42 million deal he signed in 2023. This time, however, there are no trade demands, no public frustration, and no plans to stay away from training camp.
Instead, the four-time Pro Bowler is expressing confidence that his representatives and the Colts’ front office will reach an agreement.
Taylor Wants to Be a Colt for Life
“I have faith,” Taylor told reporters Wednesday. “There have been some good conversations, but I have faith between my agent and the front office. Like I’ve said already, I would love to be a Colt for life, and I have faith that things are moving in the right direction.”
Taylor’s confidence comes after another spectacular season in which he reaffirmed his place among the NFL’s elite running backs. He rushed for 1,585 yards on a league-high 323 carries while leading the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns.
His production has also cemented his place in Colts history. Taylor already owns the franchise record with 69 rushing touchdowns and sits just 1,629 rushing yards behind Hall of Famer Edgerrin James for the all-time rushing record.
At 27 years old, Taylor believes his durability and consistency have helped change the perception of running backs across the league.
“I think we’ve continued to play at a high level,” Taylor said. “It doesn’t matter what age you are if you’re an elite guy. I think it shows on and off the field, and people are continuing to prove that.”
With both sides maintaining open communication and Taylor reporting to camp without distractions, the Colts appear well-positioned to secure the face of their offense for years to come.
