All eyes are on the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition in Berea, with GM Andrew Berry making it clear that only one thing will decide who wins the starting quarterback job . ESPN’s Ben Solak noted how important it is for QB Shedeur Sanders to add a Russell Wilson-type weapon to his arsenal while he tries to fight off veteran QB Deshaun Watson .
As noted in our recaps from Day 1 and Day 2 of training camp , the offense, especially the passing offense, has not looked in sync overall. That isn’t totally surprising given the new offensive system, remade offensive line, new but young weapons, and two quarterbacks competing for the starting job.
In a video posted by the team’s social media, HC Todd Monken seemed to give credit to the Browns defense for making things tough on the offense so far in training camp:

Interesting to note that DE Jared Verse , who wasn’t added to the roster until June, is who Monken has breaking the team huddle at the end of practice.
A lot of positives were noted by Monken during this talk, especially that the roster has always been trying to go too fast, too hard. Is it necessarily a good thing that Cleveland’s defense is controlling practice so far? It is too early to tell. Often, different drills are set up to create opportunities for success for each side of the ball, but Monken may not value that as much as other coaches.
For now, the Browns defense is making things tough on the Browns offense. That could either bring out the best in Cleveland’s offense down the road or be a sign that the Browns will once again struggle scoring points in 2026.
