The San Francisco 49ers continued their training camp roster churn Wednesday, signing cornerback Eli Apple, defensive lineman Xavier Thomas and running back Zamir White to one-year deals. To clear space, the team waived wide receiver Junior Bergen, punter Jack Bouwmeester and waived/injured defensive lineman K.J. Henry.
Apple is a familiar face in the building — the 49ers waived him just 10 days ago, on Aug. 2. The 31-year-old brings a decade of NFL experience across seven teams, including 104 career games and 82 starts, with six interceptions and 61 passes defensed. If he makes the 53-man roster, Apple projects as depth cornerback insurance, a role he was already occupying before his release, likely competing for a rotational spot in the secondary given his familiarity with the defense.
Thomas, a former fifth-round pick out of Clemson, gives San Francisco another body on the edge. He's logged 18 games with the Cardinals over two seasons, totaling 2.5 sacks. His six-year college career at Clemson included 17.5 sacks across 61 games. He's a developmental pass-rush piece who could carve out a role on the defensive line rotation or practice squad, considering the 49ers' current injuries at the position between Nick Bosa, Mykell Williams and Romello Height.
White's addition is the most notable from a roster-construction standpoint. He tried out for the team recently and now gives the 49ers more depth at a position that has dealt with injuries this offseason. Rookie Jordan James is dealing with a broken rib , Isaac Guerendo is also banged up, and Kaelon Black is nursing a minor injury of his own .
The former Georgia workhorse rushed for over 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in college but has struggled to find consistent touches in four years with the Raiders, capped by a limited six-game, 32-yard season in 2025. With San Francisco's backfield already crowded, White would likely need to win a job as a change-of-pace or short-yardage option, and special teams contributions could factor into whether he sticks.
With final cuts looming, all three new signees will need to make an immediate camp impression to have a real shot at the 53-man roster come the regular season.
