The Bucs are being forced to navigate not just one, but two, contract-related distractions as camp kicked off. How they handle the fallout from quarterback Baker Mayfield ending extension talks after no deal was reached before camp and whether Tampa decides to trade star defensive tackle Vita Vea, who requested a trade Monday after also not agreeing to a new contract, will have a massive effect on the upcoming season.
Tampa also added a talented veteran to its secondary. The team signed safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, who spent last season with the Miami Dolphins. He was a third-round pick in 2021 by the Detroit Lions . Melifonwu has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, but has shown he can be a very impactful player when he is on the field.
But once practice began Wednesday, all eyes were focused on the field. The day was filled with interesting takeaways , with Bucs reporter Brianna Dix highlighting the most notable.
Zyon McCollum
Cornerback Zyon McCollum is looking to rebound after a very disappointing 2025 season. With Jamel Dean gone, McCollum is being counted on to play at the level he showed earlier in his career and become the leader of a very young CB room.
He's off to a good start, as Dix reported McCollum immediately made his presence known.
"During the first play of the third-down period, cornerback Zyon McCollum snagged an interception off Baker Mayfield. A defensive player jumped offsides and as the play unraveled, Emeka Egbuka ran a corner route from the far-right side of the formation. As Egbuka made his sharp cut to the sideline at the 25-yard marker, McCollum was waiting. He stayed in Egbuka's hip pocket and undercut the pass from Mayfield, which sent the defensive sideline into cheers."
McCollum has the talent to be a CB1 and has remarkable speed. If he can play up to his potential, the Bucs could have a true shutdown corner.
Chris Godwin Jr.
With Mike Evans gone, Chris Godwin Jr. is the elder statesman of the wide receiver room. Not only will he be expected to produce top-WR numbers, but he will be relied upon to be a leader for Tampa's young receivers.
Godwin is up to the challenge, but he made it known that he will be himself and won't try to be Evans, either on the field or in the locker room.
"'As far as my leadership on this team, it doesn't change at all as far as I am concerned,' noted Godwin. 'What I did and what I have brought to this team is completely different than what Mike brought to the team, right? So, it is not like he is gone and I am like, 'Oh, I have got to step up and be somebody else or someone that I am not.' I just continue to be me…I continue to encourage the other guys and continue to try and elevate my game.'"
Baker Mayfield
Mayfield is determined not to let his contract situation affect him this season. He is betting on himself and has already earned the respect of new Bucs linebacker Christian Rozeboom, who has long admired Mayfield from their days as opponents and a brief time as teammates on the Los Angeles Rams .
"'I feel like I have played Tampa a lot in my career and been with Baker in LA for his stint and I have played against him have just a ton of respect for his love of the game and his grit as a quarterback,' described Rozeboom. 'I think it is hard to find that and not all quarterbacks in the league have that kind of drive and grit that he does so yeah, just a lot of respect for the guys on this team and I am excited to be a part of it.'"
Josiah Trotter
One of the most interesting nuggets from Day 1 of camp was rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter getting a look with the starters on defense. Trotter is competing with Rozebloom and SirVocea Dennis for a starting job, and the coaches decided to get an early look at him on the top unit.
Head coach Todd Bowles was impressed with Trotter's intelligence and believes the rookie will look even better once the hitting starts.
"'He is definitely smart,' stated Bowles. 'He is quiet but he is very tough. Obviously his play will come into play once pads come on but he understands the system very well and he is moving around great…He is a thumper…He is a very confident guy.'"
Final Thoughts
It's great to have a training camp in full swing. The season is drawing near, and camp will provide a lot of opportunities for players to earn a starting job while others hope to lock down a spot on the 53-man roster.
The Bucs are under a lot of pressure to succeed this season, and preparation is underway. From the rookies to the seasoned veterans, camp will give us a good look at how the team has evolved from last season's disaster.
