The Denver Broncos brought in veteran safety Taylor Rapp for a tryout on Wednesday, according to the NFL's transaction wire.
Rapp (6-0, 208 pounds) originally entered the league as a second-round pick out of Washington with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. After four seasons in L.A., Rapp signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2023. He suffered a season-ending knee injury last October and was cut by Buffalo this spring.
The 28-year-old safety has 72 starts on his résumé, including six starts with the Bills before his injury last season. Rapp has totaled 488 tackles, 31 pass breakups, 12 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), four fumble recoveries, two sacks and two forced fumbles in 93 career games. If signed, a healthy Rapp would provide a huge boost to Denver's safety depth.
Devon Key and JL Skinner are listed as the top backup safeties behind Brandon Jones and Talanoa Hufunga on the team's depth chart . Tycen Anderson, seventh-round draft pick Miles Scott and undrafted rookie Parker Robertson are providing additional depth at the position.
Denver coach Sean Payton confirmed after Wednesday's practice that backup center Michael Deiter suffered a season-ending quad injury and will join defensive lineman Matt Henningsen ( Achilles ) on injured reserve. After the Broncos officially place Deiter on IR, the team will have an open spot on the 91-man offseason roster .
