The shooting occurred near Normandie Avenue and Washington Boulevard in South L.A., according to the LAPD.
Police said the man was swinging the bat at bystanders and striking cars before officers shot him. Authorities did not immediately release details about what led up to the shooting.
The man was taken to a hospital after being shot and was later pronounced dead, police said.
AIR7 video showed crime-scene tape surrounding an intersection beneath a freeway as officers remained at the scene.
