Bryant is expected to miss 8-10 weeks with his knee injury, which means Chicago will be without its prized free-agent safety for their Week 1 opener and beyond. But when exactly can we expect Bryant to make his Bears debut?
Thankfully, this injury occurred early in training camp rather than closer to the start of the regular season, which means the earliest Bryant could return in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles and the latest is Week 5 at the Green Bay Packers , according to that timeline. Week 4 against the New York Jets is also on the table.
Bryant suffered the injury during a 1-on-1 rep against tight end Cole Kmet, where he landed awkwardly on his left leg. He was carted off the field, where he was emotionally distraught. Whan all is said and done, this is the best-case scenario when looking at Bryant’s initial reaction.
Now, the question becomes who will line up at safety opposite rookie Dillon Thieneman against the Carolina Panthers and beyond. Free-agent addition Cam Lewis stepped in for Bryant during Monday’s practice, so he’s an in-house candidate, as well as Elijah Hicks, who’s currently on the physically unable to perform list. The Bears could also turn to the free-agent market to bring in an experienced veteran.
