Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jalen Milroe had a throw he likely wanted back in the team’s 19-16 preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
The former Alabama quarterback threw an interception across the middle on a third-quarter play, giving the Titans good field position and taking some criticism in the process. Milroe is battling for a role in the team’s depth chart, solidly behind starter Sam Darnold and facing veteran competition for the No. 2 spot.
Jalen Milroe Facing Criticism After INT
After Milroe’s interception in Sunday’s game, Seahawks reporter Gregg Bell placed the blame on the 23-year-old quarterback for a poor decision. Bell said it was an “alarming” risk for Milroe.
“Jalen Milroe does what usually results in NFL interceptions: Throws late over the middle,” Bell wrote in a post on X. “ It’s behind Montorie Foster Jr. for an easy Titans interception. Alarming throw for turnover at the #Seahawks 38-yard line. Just a poor throw.”
Milroe continued to struggle, later taking a sack on a fourth-down play in the fourth quarter with the Seahawks trailing 19-16. Milroe had time and rolled out of the pocket, but could not get off a pass as he took a sack and the Seahawks had a turnover on downs with less than four minutes remaining.
The Seahawks got the ball back, but Milroe threw another interception on the first play of the next possession and the Titans ran out the clock to win the game.
Jalen Milroe Fighting for a Role
Milroe was drafted last season as something of an insurance policy for Darnold, who was coming off a career-best season with the Minnesota Vikings but facing questions on whether he could sustain the success. Darnold erased those doubts as the Seahawks marched to a Super Bowl win, leaving Milroe with an uncertain role for the team in 2026.
Former NFL quarterback turned analyst Brock Huard said Milroe needs to cut out the negative plays if he wants a significant role with the team.
âThose (negative) plays, that floor, has got to go away,â Huard said on Seattle Sportsâ Brock and Salk after the team’s first preseason game.
âYou want to elevate your floor always â year by year, game by game, decision by decision. Elevate your floor, eliminate the basement stuff like that. That continues to be, I think, the (needed) growth for Jalen.â
Huard added that Milroe needs to find a balance between relying on his speed to make plays and staying in the pocket to go through his progressions.
âWhen youâre labeled a dual-threat guy and (people think) all you can do is run, you want to prove people that you can play in the pocket too,â Huard said. âBut when and how you utilize that (is the challenge). Itâs a blessing and a curse to be that dynamic.â
