Layton Christian (1-0) dominated Hunter (0-1) in a nonregion matchup, scoring 48 unanswered points before the game ended after three quarters under the UHSAA 44-point mercy rule. Hughes caught a 3-yard touchdown pass and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Cash Hollingshead while also breaking free for a 69-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Salem Hills scored on its first possession when Lindon Woodland returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone for the SkyHawks’ 41-7 victory. The Lancers’ only score came on a 3-yard run by Maa’imoa Havili with 2:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Lehi 35, Maple Mountain 13
Lehi (1-0) cruised to a 35-13 victory over Maple Mountain (0-1) in a nonregion game, highlighted by standout performances from Cam Wren and Sam Verbecky. Wren caught a 74-yard touchdown pass from Briggs Jensen just three minutes into the game, setting the tone for the Pioneers. Verbecky added to the offensive onslaught with a 67-yard touchdown run shortly after, helping Lehi build a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. Provo answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by Teave Brown in the third quarter, but Green Canyon sealed the victory with a 34-yard field goal by Boston Daines with 4:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Bear River 36, Ogden 13
Eli Braegger recorded four touchdown receptions as Bear River (1-0) defeated Ogden 36-13 in a nonregion matchup. In the Bears’ first game under new coach Craig Anhder, Braegger caught an 18-yard pass from Preston Wilkinson with 2:53 left in the fourth to cap his standout night. Wilkinson connected with Braegger for earlier scores of 54, 49, and 10 yards as Bear River pulled away in the second half. Ogden (-1) managed to score back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter, highlighted by a 2-yard run from Ryker Rice, but couldn’t keep up with Bear River’s explosive offense. The Bears’ defense held Ogden scoreless in the first, second, and final quarters.
Payson 20, Mountain View 19
Justice Taylor shone in his first outing under new head coach Mike Cole, leading Payson (1-0) to a narrow 20-19 victory over Mountain View (0-1) in a nonregion game. Taylor contributed directly to all three Lions touchdowns, including a decisive 2-yard pass to Carson Wall with 4:41 remaining in the third quarter. Mountain View’s Brigham Moses opened their scoring with a thrilling 74-yard kickoff return, while Hyrum Stafford connected with Koa Giles for a 46-yard touchdown pass to give the Bruins a first-quarter lead. However, Payson’s defense held firm in the fourth quarter to secure the win, leaving Mountain View scoreless in the final period.
