There is also a clear appeal in signing a player before he becomes completely unattainable. That is the dream version of the move.
The reality is harsher. More than €50 million for an 18-year-old winger is enormous, even in this market. PSG are pricing him like a future star already, which means Liverpool would be paying for projection rather than certainty. That can work, but it can also go wrong very quickly.
There is another point here. If Liverpool are looking at Mbaye, Barcola and other wide players, that suggests the club sees a genuine need for more attacking quality and variety. That should probably encourage supporters more than any one name. It means the recruitment team are not standing still.
As a fan, you would be intrigued, absolutely. You would also want discipline. Mbaye is exciting, but Liverpool do not need to get dragged into a glamour auction with Manchester City, Chelsea and PSG involved. Track him, assess him, keep the relationship warm, but only move if the fee becomes realistic. Admiring elite talent is good business. Overpaying for potential rarely is.
