Topline Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, wants the House Ethics Committee to investigate him amid abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, Sen. Bernie Moreno’s, R-Ohio, daughter—as the ex-couple’s feud grew more heated this week, prompting calls for Miller's resignation.
Miller said Tuesday he will file paperwork requesting the investigation in an effort to clear his “name from these horrific attacks on myself and family,” adding that he will “be providing the committee all necessary documents needed for a detail[sic] examination,” he wrote on X.
Miller made the statement after several Republican senators joined Bernie Moreno in calling for him to resign from Congress after Miller published a 20-minute-long video to social media Sunday denying he ever physically abused his wife or daughter.
Bernie Moreno in a statement Sunday called Miller a “danger” to his daughter and said he needs “serious psychological help”—his first since his daughter and Miller divorced last year.
The allegations come as Miller is running for reelection in his Cleveland-area district, once considered solidly Republican but has leaned more toward Democrats amid the accusations.
Democrats have poured more resources into the campaign against Miller amid the scandal, including ads highlighting the abuse allegations and calls for an ethics investigation from some House Democrats.
Bernie Moreno and Miller are both close allies of Trump—Miller worked for Trump’s campaign and in his first administration and Trump spoke at Miller and Emily Moreno’s 2022 wedding at Trump’s Bedminster golf club.
Wednesday is the deadline for Miller to withdraw so Republicans could replace him on the ballot.
Trump has vouched for Miller’s character, but has declined to say what his next steps should be politically. He told reporters Monday, “I know Max, he’s a good person, I mean I always thought he was a very good person. And I’m going to let the families figure that out. It’s accusations.” Privately, Trump told Miller in a phone call Monday he should reconsider his candidacy, raising concerns that he could lose the race, Axios reported , citing three unnamed sources familiar with the call. Miller reportedly told Trump he remains confident, citing polls that show him ahead, though none have been released since Miller’s video statement Sunday and Bernie Moreno’s subsequent call for him to step down.
Emily Moreno has accused Miller of a pattern of physically and verbally abusive behavior, including throwing scalding water on her, shoving her and holding a gun to her head. Miller has vehemently denied the allegations. In his video statement on Sunday, he alleged, without evidence, Emily Moreno “struggled with significant mental health challenges” and accused her of making the claims to help her case in their custody dispute over their 2-year-old daughter. Miller published a trove of materials he claimed support his innocence, including recordings and text messages of friendly conversations with Emily Moreno after the alleged incidents of abuse. Miller also said in the video he was not at fault for a broken collarbone injury his daughter suffered in February. Emily Moreno did not explicitly accuse Miller of causing the injury, but told detectives who investigated it in February that he had abused her previously. Miller faces abuse allegations from a second woman, former Trump White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, who dated Miller prior to his relationship with Emily Moreno and claimed he shoved and slapped her at his Washington apartment during an argument. Miller sued Grisham for defamation and the two settled the dispute, though she accused him of violating the agreement last month by making disparaging remarks about her while discussing Emily Moreno’s allegations against him. Miller also sued Emily Moreno for defamation in May, shortly after her allegations against him were first made public in a series of media reports.
