The Boston Red Sox are rolling, thanks to the work of their starting rotation, bullpen, and the offense finally getting together, putting them right in the middle of the AL playoff race.
One of the main pillars of their offense has been Willson Contreras, who has turned Boston’s afterthought of a position in first base into one of their best. The Red Sox haven’t had a first basement of note since they traded away Anthony Rizzo when he was a prospect. However, Triston Casas was supposed to fix that. Though, it seems he will never live up to his potential.
Casas was next up
Casas was Boston’s No. 2 prospect , and No. 16 in the MLB’s top 100 in 2022 before he was called up.
In his first full season in 2023, Casas looked like a future superstar for Boston. He slashed .263/.367/.490/.856 with 21 doubles, 24 home runs, and 65 RBI in 132 games, and he came in third place in the ROTY race.
His Statcast page was also eerily similar to Roman Anthony’s 2025, so it really did look like Casas was next up for Boston. Except, something they didn’t see coming happened: multiple season-ending injuries.
Catastrophic injuries struck

In the next season, Casas was only able to play 63 games before he tore cartilage in his ribcage , and was unable to play for the rest of the season.
Then, the next season after he was all healed up. He was only able to play 29 games before he ruptured his patellar tendon running over first base . This injury left him unable to play into this season, which inspired the Sox to go out and get Contreras.
Casas’ future is set in stone

Now, Casas has had another potentially season-ending surgery, this time for his left wrist . His body has been wracked with major injuries, so any hope that he will return to that 2023 form has probably left Boston.
With that in mind, Casas has two years of control after this season . Boston will probably keep him on their roster as they try to heal him, and could put him in AAA to see if his durability will come back, and if skills will as well. Otherwise, there’s not really a path forward with him with Boston other than being Contreras' backup, to the disappointment of the Red Sox, fans, and probably himself.
