The internet has become part of everyday life. We use it to plan, research, work, and connect. But one corner of the internet has essentially recreated the old sitcom catchphrase era and fused it with modern meme culture.
Before social media exploded, pop culture was carried by the funny sayings you heard on TV shows, commercials, or movies. In the ’90s, Family Matters was a hit, and Steve Urkel’s nasally “Did I do that?” was coming out of everyone’s mouth. It was the equivalent of going viral long before the word existed.
Other iconic lines from that era included “Help, I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up,” “You are the weakest link. Goodbye!” and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’ll be back,” which became a recurring theme throughout the Terminator franchise. Back then, commercials were everywhere, appointment television was still a thing, and catchphrases spread because everyone was watching the same stuff.
Today, streaming has nearly erased commercials, attention spans are shorter, and everyone is glued to their phones. But one thing hasn’t changed. Catchy lines still dominate pop culture, only now they spread through memes clipped from their original source.
During joint practice between the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills , players were challenged to identify some of the most recognizable memes from the last few years. Former Texas A&M teammates KC Concepcion and Ar’Maj Reed‑Adams shared a laugh as they tried to recreate the memes they pulled from the bucket, proving that even in a new era, the art of the catchphrase lives on, just in a very different form.
