As we count down the days until the start of the NFL regular season — which kicks off with a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” on Sept. 9 — we continue to look at key offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams.
This week, we’re looking as the players most in danger of being cut during the preseason, and we’ve arrived at the Houston Texans .
Jordan is four years into his NFL career, and he has yet to surpass the 20 receptions he logged as a rookie back in 2021.
The 26-year-old has just 532 yards and five touchdowns across 36 games, and with the depth Houston now has at tight end behind Dalton Schultz — Cade Stover, Foster Moreau, Louis Hansen, Marlin Klein, Layne Pryor — it’ll be difficult for Jordan to keep his spot on the 53-man roster.
Trent Brown will presumably be Houston’s starting right tackle next season, but with the way Aireontae Ersery played last year (48 pressures, 30 hurries, seven sacks allowed on 1,166 snaps played), there could at least be some competition at left tackle.
But with the Texans adding Braden Smith from the division rival Colts, plus other players like Derrick Graham, Jarrett Kingston, and James Neal III, there may not be any room for Fisher, who played just 78 snaps at tackle last year.
The Texans’ front seven was one of the most dominant last season, thanks to a fierce pass-rush that often kept them in games.
With Mario Edwards and Tim Settle both gone, there could be an opening to earn some reps at defensive tackle heading into camp. However, behind Sheldon Rankins and Tommy Togiai, rookie second-round pick Kayden McDonald is expected to get a lot of looks, which could make a veteran like Naquan Jones expendable.
