Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Sovereignty was the shining star of weekend horse racing, dominating the Whitney Stakes on a stellar program at Saratoga as races around the country continued to shape up year-end showdowns.
Along the way, trainer Bob Baffert started to show the next chapter in his mastery of 2-year-olds headed toward the Triple Crown trail.
And on the global scene, Group 1 events in Ireland, France and Germany carried implications for the near future.

Sovereignty dominated Saturday's $1 million Grade I Whitney at Saratoga, blowing the doors off a field that included the reigning Dubai World Cup winner, a Breeders' Cup Classic winner and last year's champion 3-year-old filly.
Nitrogen, the star filly, led to the furlong pole in the 1 1/8-mile contest, but offered no resistance as Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado flew by en route to a 4 3/4-length score.

Nitrogen gamely held second over longshot Antiquarian, with Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude and 2023 Breeders' Cup Classic winner White Abarrio reporting sixth and last in the seven-horse order of finish.
Sovereignty, winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy and Travers, missed the Breeders Cup last year because of a fever, but was named Horse of the Year, anyway.

He started 2026 with question marks after finishing second to White Abarrio in the Grade II Oaklawn Handicap and third in the Grade I Stephen Foster, won by Magnitude. He answered those questions Saturday and can get another chance at the Breeders' Cup, as the Whitney was a "Win and You're In" race for the Classic.
On Sunday morning, the trainer reported that Nitrogen, last year's champion 3-year-old filly, exited the race in good order and will return to female competition in the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland on Oct. 4 again.
On Sunday at Mountaineer, Bracket Buster shook free from seven rivals in the $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Stakes and got away in the stretch to win by 15 lengths over Warp Nine.
While the emphasis was on older horses, the weekend wasn't totally devoid of interest on the 3-year-old front. At Mountaineer, Zihnal pressed the early pace in Sunday's $400,000 Grade III West Virginia Derby, shot to the front when asked and won off by 6 1/4 lengths over Trendsetter.
Distaff
At Woodbine, Katie's Grace came from last of five to win Saturday's $350,000 (Canadian) Bison City Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by 2 lengths over Bold Time. She finished fourth in the Woodbine Oaks in her previous start. Oaks winner Luster skipped the Bison City in favor of a run against colts in the King's Plate on Aug. 15.
On Sunday at Ellis Park, Five a Side won the $200,000 Groupie Doll Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths and Conceit took the $200,000 Audubon Oaks by 3/4 length.
Dirt mile
Igniter ran to his odds in Sunday's $400,000 Ellis Park Derby, taking charge a furlong out and drawing off to win the 1-mile test by 4 lengths. On the same program, Owen Almighty led all the way to a 1 1/4-length score in Sunday's $200,000 R.A "Cowboy" Jones Stakes.
Filly & mare sprint
Explora stalked the pace in Saturday's $500,000 Grade I Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, collared the leaders on the turn and exploded through the stretch to win by 5 lengths over Percy's Bar.
She ran 7 furlongs in 1:22.42 for jockey Flavien Prat, boosting her record to six wins and three seconds from 10 starts. Her only non-exacta finish was a fourth in the Kentucky Oaks.
Turf
The top three finishers from last month's Grade I Belmont Derby were back for Saturday's $750,000 Grade I Saratoga Derby, but none was a match for British invader Glacius. The Hugo Palmer-trained son of Too Darn Hot shot to the front, built a daylight lead and was never threatened, winning by 1 1/4 lengths over West End Kid.
Glacius arrived with a somewhat underwhelming resume -- a single win from five starts, none of them above Group 3 level.
Also: Air Recruit won Saturday's $100,000 Oceanport Stakes at Monmouth Park and English Actor took Saturday's $150,000 (Canadian) Niagara Stakes at Woodbine.
Filly & mare turf
Kentucky Belle came off a four-month layoff to upset Friday's $500,000 Grade II Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks by a head over the favorite, Faithful Departed.
The Justify filly, trained by Brad Cox for owner/breeder WinStar Farm, started second-last of eight, rallied outside rivals right behind Faithful Departed and outkicked that horse in the final strides.
It took a while for Warming to get warmed up in Saturday's $200,000 Grade II Yellow Ribbon at Del Mar, but once the 4-year-old Global Campaign filly got rolling from the back of the seven-horse field, she got the job done. At the finish, it was Warming by a neck over long-time leader Princess Moche with Take a Breath another neck back in third.
Turf mile
A brief but intense downpour hit Saratoga as the horses paraded to the post for Saturday's $750,000 Grade I Fourstardave. But as the rain eased, Deterministic did not, rallying past pacesetting Mi Bago to a 1 1/2-length victory, his sixth straight win, a repeat in the Fourstardave and a "Win and You're In" spot in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile.
