Texas Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi was placed on the 15-day injured list due to "right posterior elbow inflammation," the team announced Monday
Eovaldi last pitched on Aug. 7. He threw 5 1/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles and allowed one earned run on four hits. Eovaldi struck out and walked two, and ended with a no-decision.
Any time a pitcher is added to the IL with an injury concerning their throwing elbow, there is concern it could be a big issue. The best-case scenario for the Rangers and Eovaldi would be a minimum stint on the IL and a return in late August.
Eovaldi leads the Rangers with 10 wins on 22 starts. He has thrown a team-high 132 2/3 innings and has struck out 137.
The concern for Eovaldi's elbow is valid. He has had two Tommy John surgeries in his career. The first happened when he was in high school. The second was in August 2016 when he was pitching for the New York Yankees.
Eovaldi's second Tommy John surgery caused him to miss the entire 2017 season. In the nine seasons since his second procedure, Eovaldi has pitched in 204 games with a 74-47 record, 1,085 strikeouts and has been named an All-Star twice.
In a corresponding move, Texas promoted right-handed pitcher Ben Peoples. The 25-year-old has pitched in 12 games for the Rangers this season, all out of the bullpen. He has an 0-1 record with a 2.19 ERA.
The Rangers (59-59) entered Monday trailing the first-place Astros by half a game in the AL West and hold a one-game lead over the Detroit Tigers for the final AL wild-card spot.
