Dodgers, Yankees Among 6 MLB Teams Targeting Catchers at Trade Deadline

With six days to go before Major League Baseball's annual trade deadline, the market is tilted heavily toward sellers. All but three National League teams are within six games of a Wild Card berth through July 27. The same can be said of the American League.
Within this dynamic, the market to acquire a catcher is even more heavily slanted.
The Miami Marlins entered play July 28 at 53-54, only two games out of a Wild Card berth. Yet with six teams in the market to acquire a catcher before the Aug. 3 deadline, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB .com, the Marlins might be compelled to trade backstop Liam Hicks.
Hicks, 27, is slashing .279/.358/.438 in his second MLB season. By OPS, Hicks is the Marlins' second-best hitter to Otto Lopez. He's also under team control through 2030, potentially making him one of the more attractive players at any position before the deadline.
For a team needing a catcher, Hicks hasn't played a lot of catcher lately. All but seven of his 20 starts in July have come at designated hitter. Of those, only four have come behind the plate (his other three starts came at first base).

Hicks has played 272 innings at catcher this season through July 27, and graded out as neutral defensively according to Defensive Runs Saved. Combined with an above-average bat, any team could find room for Hicks on their catching depth chart.
The list of suitors includes the New York Yankees , Los Angeles Dodgers , Chicago White Sox , Boston Red Sox , Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays , according to Feinsand.

A 2021 draft pick out of Arkansas State, Hicks made his debut with the Marlins in 2025. In 119 games last season, he slashed .247/.346/.346. This year, he's added some power (14 homers) and leads the Marlins with 60 RBIs.
Feinsand went on to suggest that the loser of the Hicks sweepstakes might turn to one of the St. Louis Cardinals' catchers — Pedro Páges or Iván Herrera — if there is a Hicks sweepstakes at all.
The Marlins were a season-high 10 games over .500 on July 9 before they lost 12 consecutive games, a streak that ended July 26.
