The Miami Heat have been looking to build on their blockbuster offseason ever since acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo. They attempted to make another splash by pursuing LeBron James, but he ultimately chose to join the Philadelphia 76ers instead.
After missing out on James, Miami shifted its focus. For weeks, the Heat have been heavily linked to Dallas Mavericks sharpshooter Klay Thompson.
“ Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson, a five-time All Star and the fourth-most prolific three-point shooter in NBA history, has emerged as a player of strong interest to the Miami Heat, multiple sources said in recent days. The Heat has interest in adding Thompson whether LeBron James joins the Heat or not, a source said," Miami Herald's Barry Jackson wrote
More recently, the four-time NBA champion has reportedly become Miami's top target.
“They hope not. The Miami Heat's number one priority right now is to acquire shooting. And they found their No. 1 target for that...Klay Thompson. The problem is Klay Thompson has one year left on his Mavs contract so they're exploring whether they can trade for him, whether this could end up in a buyout, we'll see over the next several weeks," ESPN's Shams Charania said.
With significant interest in Thompson, the Heat are weighing whether they should pursue a trade or hope the Dallas Mavericks eventually agree to a buyout. According to The Stein Line's Jake Fischer, a trade centered around Nikola Jovic has been discussed.
“The Mavericks would trade Klay Thompson. There’s definitely been some type of buzz, framework, whatever about a Klay Thompson for Nikola Jovic thing for weeks now,” Fischer said.
A fresh start could benefit Jovic, who has struggled to carve out a consistent role, while Thompson is looking to compete for another championship during the final stages of his career.
Thompson is entering the final year of his $50 million contract with the Mavericks. It would be a manageable contract for the Heat to absorb, and if the fit doesn't work out, both sides could simply move on when he reaches free agency. Miami desperately needs perimeter shooting, and Thompson would immediately address that need.
