The Colorado Rockies are one of the more intriguing teams at the 2026 MLB trade deadline. Even though they don't have a Tarik Skubal or Mason Miller-level superstar trade target, Hunter Goodman is more than good enough to be a headliner.
He has 31 home runs as a catcher and is a better hitter outside of Coors Field. With Shea Langeliers potentially out for the season and the Minnesota Twins potentially hanging onto Ryan Jeffers, Goodman might be the best catcher trade target.
But what will the Rockies do with Goodman in trade talks? Well, Sam Blum of The Athletic is predicting that the Rockies will make a decision that'd be bad news for the New York Yankees and all catcher-needy teams by extending him rather than trading him.
Rockies predicted to extend, not trade, Hunter Goodman
"Colorado extends Hunter Goodman," Blum predicts. "Maybe it comes before the deadline, maybe after. But Colorado seems keen on building around their best player, not trading him amid a lost season."
While the Rockies might not be contenders right now and have a ton of work to do to become a postseason threat, Goodman shouldn't just be traded to further add prospects.
At some point, the Rockies have to figure out who they're going to build their team around moving forward. And while Goodman's defense might be a bit of a question mark, why not build around the superstar catcher?
Blum is predicting that the Rockies will extend Goodman rather than trade him. He's 26 years old and under club control through the 2029 season.

After another All-Star nod this season, it's going to be costly to keep Goodman around long-term. But catchers with his offensive production are rare, and he's shown such prowess for two straight seasons.
Last year, he had 31 homers with an .843 OPS, and this season, he has 31 homers and an .888 OPS despite playing just 98 games compared to 144 a year ago.
Goodman is worth signing to a long-term deal and would be one of the key building blocks for the Rockies to become contenders once again.
This prediction would be a great sign for the Rockies, but for teams like the Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays , and Boston Red Sox , this prediction would be some tough trade deadline news.
