After playing with his former head coach Darian DeVries and Indiana basketball in Peru, former Indiana men’s basketball center, Sam Alexis, has been granted an injunction for an extra year of college eligibility. He is one of 19 athletes granted such relief by a Tennessee court.
Whether Alexis retains eligibility throughout the season remains to be seen. He also has yet to indicate whether he would spend his final season at Indiana, should the ruling become final.
This is a bit of an odd story, in part because there’s a lot left to play out. His eligibility right now is dependant on a temporary injunction, which worked for Louis Moore and Indiana football last year, but its obviously not a final judgment.
Then there’s the issue of his fit at Indiana. The Hoosiers have a scholarship spot open, but made big moves via the portal in the front court this past offseason, adding Samet Ygitoglu and Aiden Sherrell from SMU and Alabama, respectively.
Alexis had been playing in the NBA Summer League as an un-drafted free agent with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He joined DeVries and company in Peru for Indiana’s exhibition games last week when his NBA commitments wrapped up.
Adding Alexis would be a big get for Indiana, a team that currently lacks depth inside despite its portal additions. With Ygitoglu ineligible for international play in Peru, Alexis slotted immediately into a starting spot, joining a group he had seemingly never practiced with.
His willingness to join Indiana in Peru is probably a good sign of his relationship with DeVries and the program as a whole, but with a potential professional career simultaneously developing for him, it remains to be seen whether he would want to come off the bench for a college team.
Assuming he’s open to that role, this is a guy DeVries and Indiana should pursue wholeheartedly. The roster looks more balanced than last season, but still lacks depth up front and only brings back one player, Trent Sisley, from last year’s team.
