Following a pair of rough innings the night before, McCullers found himself designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26.
Garrett Stallings was recalled from Class AAA Nashville in his place.
The 32-year-old McCullers lasted not even one full homestand with the Brewers after being acquired from Houston alongside right-hander Colton Gordon for prospect Jadyn Fielder on July 15.
McCullers gave up five runs (two earned) in 4 ⅔ innings across his two games with the Brewers. A two-time World Series champion with the Astros , McCullers looked sharp in his first two innings in his Brewers debut July 20 before running into some trouble in his third inning.
On July 25, McCullers walked four across 1⅔ innings. All three runs he gave up in the ninth inning were unearned, but his inability to protect an 8-2 lead meant Trevor Megill had to pitch to secure a save.
McCullers walked four against the Rockies and didn't show enough ability to throw competitive breaking balls. Across his two games, he threw 97 pitches and only 54 strikes.
