Trevor Story’s rough rehab could disrupt what the Red Sox built during his absence originally appeared on The Sporting News .

The Boston Red Sox have been playing injured for almost the entire season, missing key stars that were part of the heart of the team last year. It hasn’t stopped them though, as they have surged over the summer, to a Wild Card spot and one of the best teams in the American League .
Now, those injured stars are making their way back to the big leagues, as they rehab in the minors. However, the probable first star to return, Trevor Story, actually might mess up the good thing Boston has going.
Story is struggling at AAA

Right now, Story is doing rehab alongside his backup shortstop, Isiah Kiner-Falefa. In his rehab games, he’s struggling pretty bad. Over his 13 At-Bats at AAA , Story is 3-13 with zero walks, and four strikeouts. That makes his slashline .231/.231/.231/.462 , which is nowhere near acceptable for MLB standards.
Before he got injured, he was only slashing .206/.244/.303/.547 this season, so it doesn’t make sense to bring him back over guys who are much better.
Calling him up may mess things up

Due to this cringeworthy start, some fans think bringing back Story would be an actual disaster . And, honestly, they could be right.
When Story and IKF went down, Boston had to dig deep into their depth to replace them. Guys like Andruw Monasterio and Nick Sogard stepped up , bringing some needed offense to the Red Sox.
Now, if the Red Sox bring back Story, one of them will lose playing time, or even be sent back down.
His replacement is obvious

If Boston is convinced they need more help offensively at the middle infield, it would be better to give their top prospect in Franklin Arias the nod .
Arias was dominating AA all this season, and was promoted to AAA at the beginning of this month. Since then, he’s slashed .291/.357/.488/.846 with five doubles, four home runs, and 22 RBI in 22 games.
Arias is also a shortstop, and is Boston’s future franchise player at the position. He’s a top four player in all the major prospect rankings , so getting him for an October push might be Boston’s best move.
