The Patriots didn't make that move so he could quietly blend into the background. But while everyone has been watching Brown, another receiver is starting to make a pretty good case for himself.
Romeo Doubs is getting noticed at Patriots training camp, and Monday provided a particularly encouraging glimpse of what he could bring to Drake Maye's offense.
During a two-minute drill, Doubs hauled in a corner-route touchdown from Maye with Christian Gonzalez in coverage. This wasn't a simple pitch-and-catch against a defensive back struggling to keep up. Gonzalez is one of the best young corners in football, and Doubs had to go up and win the ball. Maye delivered it exactly where it needed to be.

That kind of play is easy to overlook when a player like Brown is dominating the headlines, but it could mean quite a bit once the regular season arrives. New England suddenly has more than one receiver capable of making life difficult for opposing defenses. Doubs has the chance to become one of those players.
The Patriots' offense should have a different feel with Brown involved, particularly because his presence can draw attention away from everyone else. If Doubs continues making plays when defenses aren't completely focused on him, those opportunities could start piling up.
And if teams decide they can't afford to leave him alone, well, that's when Brown becomes even more dangerous. That's a nice problem for Maye to have.

The quarterback also deserves some credit for the touchdown. Throwing a ball over Gonzalez and giving Doubs a chance to make a play required both confidence and precision. The pass landed in the right spot, and Doubs did the rest.
It's still training camp, so nobody needs to start making bold predictions based on one touchdown catch. But the Patriots are clearly building a receiving corps with more options than they've had in recent years.
